HEKIMA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL

BACKGROUND

The history of the school dates back to the early 1900’s when missionaries founded a small all-girls middle (upper primary) school. The school, being an exemplary all-girls boarding school at that time, after going through a number of hands, was finally reclaimed back by the St. Therese Sisters after which Hekima was founded in 1988 when it started its long journey of executing its mission of availing education opportunities to young women.

MISSION

To provide quality education to young women in order to emancipate them psychologically, culturally, socially, economically and spiritually, and to enable them to develop their talents, gain confidence as individuals, and have an impact  on the development of their society.

VISION

To be a foundational development training institution where youth and adult women are given the opportunity and support to fulfill their academic and human potential.

MOTTO

We seek wisdom, understanding and knowledge in caritas and  veritas.

UNIQUENESS

Hekima is the first girls’ private secondary school ever in the Kagera Region, purposely and strategically founded by the St. Therese Sisters to combat the long-time practised African mal-tradition whereby women have been being stereotyped into assuming a future of limited choices by providing them with less educational opportunities than males thus creating an atmosphere of inferiority. This compelled them into vicious circles of exploitation, dependency and poverty.

Hekima, therefore, aims at breaking these rancorous circles by offering a well-balanced education, whereby our students are groomed spiritually to incorporate love with the fear of God so as to become useful to themselves and others; and academically, to translate their classroom knowledge into practical life skills which turns them into job creators instead of job-seekers. This is why we offer rare training such as Information & Technology, Textiles & Dressmaking as well as Food & Nutrition, among others. As a result, our graduates always clearly and undoubtedly stand out in all circles of life including higher training institutions, leadership, places of work, social activities and families.
